Hello Grade 6 Parents,
We have been working hard these past few weeks learning the new school and the expected classroom routines. I've also had a chance to hear your children read and work with them as they write. Our focus for the term in reading fluency and decoding new words- also determining what these words mean. I will be sending home a passage for students to practice reading aloud each week. Please have your child read this passage once or twice a night with a focus on pausing at punctuation, reading with a natural flow- not word by word or halting- and adding emphasis where appropriate. Students will answer some comprehension questions about these passages each week.

We are working to remember the basics of writing. All students are required to write using capitals and periods. We will also work on expanding our vocabulary, reading to make sure our work makes sense and stays in one tense, and developing our sentence length and structure. Journal writing at home will help with writing fluency. We will also have editing challenges to help us detect our errors and learn how to fix them.
Here is a good journal idea website:

Math:
Continue working on your multiplication facts. Multiplication snap is a fun card game to practice at home!
  • Write on the board, Ace = 1, J = 0, Q = 11, K = 12.
  • Break the students into teams of 2, and ask the students to shuffle their cards.
  • Instruct the students to deal the cards into two piles and stack a pile facedown in front of each player.
  • Both students turn over their top cards at the same time. As quickly as possible, they multiply the 2 cards together, and shout the answer.
  • The student who says the correct answer first places the cards in his or her winning pile. If a tie occurs, students should continue to turn their cards until someone wins the pile.
